A closer look
The arithmetic mean is the sum divided by the number of values. The median is the middle value after sorting; for an even count, it is the average of the two middle values. For 2, 4, and 9, the mean is 5 and the median is 4. Every entry has equal weight, so repeated numbers count repeatedly. Negative values, decimals, and scientific notation such as 1e3 are accepted.
A practical example
For 2, 4 and 9, the sum is 15, the mean is 5 and the median is 4. Repeated entries count repeatedly; every number has equal weight.
A useful tip
Enter one thousand as 1000, not 1,000: commas separate entries, so 1,000 means the two numbers 1 and 0. This is an unweighted average.

Does it skip invalid entries?
No. An invalid item prevents a result and is identified in the error message so you can fix it.
How large can a list be?
Use up to 10,000 numbers and 150,000 characters. Each number must be between −1 trillion and 1 trillion; totals above the supported result range are rejected.
